Wind mitigation discounts in Florida, explained

Nymble Insurance ·

Florida insurers must offer premium discounts for features that reduce wind loss. A wind mitigation inspection on the state's OIR-B1-1802 form documents roof covering, deck attachment, roof-to-wall connections, roof shape, secondary water resistance and opening protection. Those credits apply to the wind portion of your premium.

What does the inspection look at?

The uniform mitigation verification form (OIR-B1-1802) covers building code compliance, roof covering, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall attachment (toe nails, clips, single or double wraps), roof geometry (hip vs. gable), secondary water resistance, and opening protection (shutters or impact-rated glass).

Who can do it?

Licensed inspectors, contractors, engineers and others listed on the form. The report is generally accepted for five years if nothing material changes.

Which features matter most?

Hip roofs, stronger roof-to-wall connections and full opening protection usually make the largest difference, but credits vary by carrier.

Is there help paying for upgrades?

The state's My Safe Florida Home program, run by the Department of Financial Services, offers free wind mitigation inspections and grants for eligible homeowners. Its support center said in August 2026 that it is accepting applications, and the 2026-27 budget carried its unspent balance forward. Funding is set each year by the Legislature, so check mysafeflhome.com before planning work.
